Weston Wiese’s Mustang Story:
“In late summer 2019, I was enjoying the last of my break at home and spending time in my parents’ shop. We had always been a mechanical family and were working on my brother’s service truck, completely stumped by what might be wrong with it. My brother asked his friend Joe to stop over and take a look, since he had a long career of automotive expertise. When Joe showed up, he wasn’t able to figure out the issue, but he did have an interesting proposition for my brother. He had just gotten back from a trip to Arizona looking at a 1939 Chevrolet Sedan that had been sitting out in the weeds for 60 years. Joe was planning to drive back to Arizona from Wisconsin to buy and bring it home.
Then he showed us a picture of a faded, light-yellow 1966 Ford Mustang coupe parked next to the Chevy. The rear of the car had been damaged in an accident, but as far as he could tell it was rock solid and complete. The offer was this: If my brother wanted to buy the Mustang, Joe would bring it back to Wisconsin for him and split the fuel cost. He was taking a two-car trailer either way. After some deliberation, my brother turned him down, because he was too busy to take on another project.
About a week later, I moved back down to college for the semester, and as I was sitting in a sunny warm study area daydreaming, the Mustang crossed my mind. I couldn’t help but think my brother had made a mistake. The price was fair for a rust-free Mustang, and he had always wanted one. I gave him a call and tried convincing him once more, but he told me if I cared so much about it, I should just buy it myself.
I hadn’t given it much thought, to be honest. The only experience I had with old cars was from the previous summer, when I had convinced my dad to let me put back together his 1970 Shelby GT500, which had been disassembled for restoration since the early 1990s. I called my dad, and he thought it wasn’t a terrible idea to buy this Mustang, since I could always resell the car to recoup my investment if needed. I called Joe to tell him I was in, and we agreed on a deal … “
