2025 Ford Mustang RTR Spec 3 First Test

Formula Drift tuning, rear-wheel drive, and 810 horsepower equal one slidey Mustang.

When offered the opportunity to test Ford Mustangs modified by two-time Formula Drift champion Vaughn Gitten Jr.’s shop, RTR, we made some assumptions. The top-of-the-line Spec 5 we tested first destroyed them. The more affordable, more readily available RTR Spec 3 we tested next, though, confirmed every single one of them.

Our primary assumption, quite simply, was that a tuner car built by a pro drifter’s shop would be able to get sideways at the drop of a hat. But the Spec 5, with its extra-wide wheels, stickier tires, and grip-oriented suspension setup, didn’t meet said assumption. Despite its tremendous power and rear-drive configuration, that car wanted to grip and go. Getting it to drift took real effort, and even then, they weren’t huge, smokey drifts.
