New Ford Mustang GTD Variant May Have Just Run 6:41 Nurburgring Lap

A YouTube video of a trackside lap timer seems to suggest that Ford has cut more than 10 seconds off its previous best time around the Nordschleife.

As recently as 18 months ago, the title of fastest American car to ever lap the Nürburgring was not exactly hotly contested; a privately-run Dodge Viper held the title for nearly a decade before Ford reset it with the Mustang GTD. Ford knew that a C8-gen Corvette time was coming, however, so the Blue Oval reset it again ... before Chevrolet's ZR1 and ZR1X both eclipsed it. Less than a year later, though, Ford's super-Stang might already have set a time that could win it back.

A trackside video shared by YouTube account StatesideSupercars seems to show a variant of the Mustang GTD lapping the Nordschleife in a hand-timed 6:41.74, a time that would represent an improvement of more than 10 seconds. This is a hand-timed lap observed from a fixed location away from the start / finish line, so the exact number is likely inaccurate, but it should represent a ballpark estimate of just how fast the super-Mustang completed its roughly-13-mile record run …
