2026 Ford Mustang Dark Horse SC Moves the Game On
Positioned below the mighty GTD, the Dark Horse picks up where the Shelby GT500 left off.
The 2026 Ford Mustang Dark Horse SC is almost painfully loud. I instinctively covered my ears as somebody banged off the 7500-rpm limiter performing a burnout before lining up to run yet another sub-11-second pass down Sonoma Raceway’s drag strip. Engineers tell me that they decided it needed to be even louder than the already-ear-shattering previous-generation Shelby GT500.
The exhaust is a perfect metaphor for almost every facet of the Dark Horse SC. In every area Ford thought the Shelby could have been made better the new car has been tweaked and tightened and made more aggressive. No, it’s not the top dog anymore, thanks to the radical Mustang GTD. But the Dark Horse SC is another step forward in the world of Mustangs doing things that would have seemed impossible just 15 years ago.
It may not seem like much in the world of nearly 800-hp cars, but the extra 35 horsepower the 795-hp Dark Horse SC has compared to the Shelby GT500 was something I noticed right away during my own runs down the drag strip. Ford is still using the rev-happy Predator 5.2-liter supercharged V-8, but it has been supplemented with an oxygen system to keep it emissions friendly and a smaller pulley to pick up the extra ponies. This is the exact same supercharger used on the GTD. On the strip the shift from first to second from the rocket-quick seven-speed dual-clutch transmission lit up the rear tires in a somewhat-frightening but traction-controlled manner, the car trapping at 130 mph. If the rear tires hook up just right using the system’s launch control, 0 to 60 mph can likely be done in about three seconds, although Ford doesn’t quote an official time. This thing is damn quick …
