Ford's Rarest Muscle Cars Sold Only In Kansas
Almost from the beginning, Ford created regional special editions of the Mustang, most notably the California Special. In 1968, Ford had Shelby build 4,118 higher-performance Mustangs for the West Coast market that were fairly cool, but nothing about them actually screamed "California." They also made some special edition High Country Specials for the Rocky Mountain states, as well as a few other regional Mustangs, which again, really didn't have anything to do with their respective regions. Then, in 1970, Ford finally found the local flavor and issued a limited edition 'Stang that did the Kansas City area proud.
The Ford Mustang Twister Special was named after "Tornado Alley", which cuts right through the heart of the Midwest, and was an ultra-rare exclusive to the Kansas City sales district. While it may seem like bad form to name a car after a deadly natural disaster today, people were a lot less upright back then, and it was seen as playful as well as a source of local pride. In addition to the Mustang, there was also a Torino Cobra Twister Special, with both cars being some of the most collectible Ford muscle cars of the Golden Era.
