Ford Mustang GTD Returns To Nürburgring To Reclaim Chevy Corvette ZR1X Record

It didn’t take Ford long to get back on the horse … literally. After Chevy’s Corvette ZR1X dethroned the Ford Mustang GTD as the fastest American car ever to lap the Nürburgring, the Blue Oval is already back in Germany, tweaking, testing, and very likely plotting revenge. Because if there’s one thing Ford hates more than losing, it’s losing to Chevrolet.

Blue Oval Returns To The Green Hell

Spy shots captured by The Drive and Instagram user Wilcobok show a Mustang GTD prototype circling the Nürburgring again, this time sporting new dive planes on the front bumper and revised hood vents. The changes hint at aero fine-tuning, suggesting Ford’s engineers aren’t ready to let that Corvette-shaped chip sit on their shoulders much longer. Whether this is a full-blown record attempt or simply prep work for one, the timing feels too pointed to be coincidental.

Earlier this year, the GTD posted a blistering 6:52.072 lap, which was fast enough to claim the title of fastest American car at the Ring. That lasted only a few months. The Corvette ZR1 and its even meaner sibling, the ZR1X, answered back with laps of 6:50.763 and 6:49.275, respectively. The margin is close enough that a few tweaks in downforce or traction might flip the scoreboard once again …
