September 11, 2001... (Never Forget)

These were my thoughts on that fateful day and the days that followed...

"I don't know where to begin... I've been glued to the TV and radio since this happened.  I've gone from shock to anger to sadness... Right now, I'm numb and struggling to make some sense out of what happened, why it happened, and what will happen next.

I'll never forget the morning of September, 11, 2001.  My wife and I were in the process of checking out of a lovely little Inn in Vermont, the kind of place you go to "get away from it all" (no TV's, radios, or even alarm clocks in the rooms).  As we came up to the front desk, ready to just pay our bill and begin the drive back to New York, the lady at the desk just looks at us, and says, "You don't even know what happened yet, do you?"  We hadn't heard.  At first, it was difficult to process what she was saying, something about a hijacked plane being flown right into the World Trade Center... I calmly walked away from her, and into the bar, where a TV on the wall showed images of the burning WTC, flashed to a picture of a plane flying right into one of the Twin Towers, and then I watched in horror as the WTC collapsed onto itself, spewing plumes of thick smoke and debris.  Then the reports of the attack on the Pentagon, and another plane crashing in Pennsylvania.  It was almost too much.  I looked around me, at my fellow Americans, and we all shared a quiet moment.  There was nothing to say.  We would never be the same..."
