Q Letter... Signs that you need a career change Here are a few signs that it may be time for you to switch careers: ● Your dissatisfaction manifests itself in physical and emotional symptoms, including headaches, stomachaches, insomnia or depression ● You don't see any opportunity for advancement ● You're constantly bored or constantly overworked ● You chafe against your company's policies ● Weekends and vacations are the only good things about your job. Q Letter as alternative to traditional cover letter Career coaches have been teaching their clients about a new type of cover letter, called a Q Letter, that many say is an effective alternative to traditional cover letters - and maybe even resumes. The Q Letter provides a side-by-side comparison of your qualifications and the minimum qualifications needed for the job. It starts out with a short introduction - something like "In response to your ad in the <name of newspaper and date>, I would respectfully like to submit my qualifications" - and follows with a qualifications chart. "You have a numbered list on the left side that lists the job's requirements, then you pick the ones that you are as good at or better and place those on the right-hand side", says Marky Stein, a career coach based in San Jose, California. The letter closes with a standard thank-you and promise to follow up. Q Letters succeed, experts say, because they accomplish a lot of the work that recruiters would otherwise have to do themselves - the letter connects the dots between your qualifications and those needed for the position. "I've asked recruiters [about the Q Letter], and they are so relieved [to receive them]", Stein says. "You have to picture someone with 350 resumes at their desk - they're relieved they don't have to do this analysis process for themselves, and they've realized that you've taken the time to do it, which makes you a fantastic job seeker." Experts say Q Letters provide enough information-at-a-glance to make the first step of the recruiter's job easier: To decide whether you're worthy of an interview! If you want to be prophetic about it, I think Q Letters will one day replace resumes, because they are so efficient", Stein says. Example:
