Pontiac GTO Is Jazzing Up For '05

Pontiac is putting a little more power and pizzazz into the GTO for '05 in the hope of quelling complaints that the modern muscle car's personality was too tame.

The changes begin with a new, 6.0-liter engine, replacing the 5.7-liter and delivering 400hp., versus 350. There is no change in transmission choices -- four-speed automatic or six-speed manual.

To help distinguish the '05 from the '04, there's new badging and a revised rear fascia that incorporates a new split dual-exhaust system with polished tips.

Also available are hood scoops, which are functional.

GM says brakes are improved for '05 and have calipers painted red. Accessories to be available later in the model year include a tall rear spoiler, front and rear fascia extensions, rocker molding extensions and grille inserts.

The new model is due to go on sale late this year or early next year.
