"Bullitt Brake Dance"

When it comes to performance, most gearheads default to “under hood” horsepower gains whether they come in the form of bolt-ons, superchargers, turbochargers, etc.

However, the faster you go, the more likely you will need to slow down... fast!

The stock brakes on the SN-95 Mustangs were a vast improvement over the binders found on the Fox body Stangs which they replaced. Hard to believe that our beloved Foxes came from the factory with drum brakes in the rear. The SN-95s sported 4 wheel disc brakes, with ABS optional. Great for its day, still OK for the driveway queen and recreational driver, but lacking asphalt bite for the enthusiast driver. Not to mention, once you step up to bigger wheels on your Stang, the stock brakes look downright puny.

Our friends at American Muscle provided us with the Bullitt Brake Package to bring our “Whoa” more in line with our “Go”. The package consists of beefier red-powdercoated brake calipers (with the white running horses on the front), as found on the 2001 Bullitt, bigger rotors, and all hardware and hoses. Mustang Magic, located in Deer Park, Long Island, NY, handled the install for us, which they did in approx 2.5 hours. No fuss, no muss. The parts bolted right on, and the kit looks great.

The kit itself costs approx $1,000, but when you consider all that is included, is a bargain.

One thing worthy of mention is that the 15” spare tire in your trunk will no longer be of any help to you if you have a flat tire, as it will not fit over the massive front brakes. You’ll need to get yourself a 17” spare tire from a Bullitt, Cobra, or Mach 1 Mustang. We found one on eBay for $200 from MPS Auto Salvage.

Although we did not measure braking distances before and after the install, the difference was like night and day. The 13” rotors up front do a tremendous job of bringing you to a halt effortlessly. They inspire confidence, enabling you to brake much deeper into a turn, and leave a lot more distance between you and the car in front of you in emergency braking situations. Just keep in mind that the car behind you may not have equivalent braking power!

Besides the obvious performance advantages, the shiny red Bullitt brakes peaking out from behind the wheel spokes look so good that we were left wondering why we waited so long to join the party. We actually look forward to braking! You’ll understand what we mean when you step up to these brakes...
