2012 Boss 302 Mustang is the Boss

Born of the rivalry between GM and Ford, the first Boss Mustang was designed to scream around the racetrack and steal rival pony car, Chevrolet Camero`s thunder. The Boss Mustang`s engine was a new and radical Ford Boss 302 V8 with large Cleveland heads and a 90-degree Windsor small block. Designed in 1969 by Larry Shinoda, a former GM engineer, the body sported one of the first front chin spoilers and innovative rear deck wings, along with its characteristic "c-stripe" side panel design.

Referred to by the secretive code, "the boss`s car" while still in production, the name stuck when the car won the 1970 Trans Am title. The Boss couldn't overcome AMC`s Javelin model in 1971 and 1972, however and the Boss did not hold another racing title.

Forty-three years later, Ford decided to resurrect the Boss. No longer interested in a GM sparring partner, this time around Ford has set its sights on beating the BMW M3 on the racetrack with its sleek and streamlined new version of the Boss 302 Mustang. The standard Ford Mustang GT engine has been modified with a brand new intake valve system and a redesigned engine, producing a monstrous 444 horsepower. This model redlines at 7500 rpm, thanks to forged pistons and rods that are fitted with a set of racing bearings and a streamlined valvetrain. The Boss can reach from 0-60 in around four seconds, with a top speed of around 155 mph.

This new version of the Boss has been designed to sing as well. The intake system has been crafted specifically to produce a characteristic "growl" upon acceleration, while the side exhaust pipes send air through a pair of metal discs to create even more growling on the way out. There's an optional silencer should the after-market consumer wish for a quieter driving experience, however. Ford also lowers the front of the car by a full 11 mm, in order to achieve the profile of the original model.

The interior features cloth seats and door panels, with a steering wheel wrapped in faux suede. A black ball gearshift complements the interior's sleek, high-grade interior fittings, while a series of dials and gauges sport light-up graphics in glowing red hues.

A special edition of just 750 cars is being given the Boss 302 Laguna Seca name, a racetrack model that is still street legal. With an upgrade to the suspension tuning, as well as a Torsen limited-slip rear differential and close-ratio six-speed manual drive stick, the Laguna Seca loses the rear seat in favor of a cross-brace beam for added stability and torsion rigidity. Laguna Secas come in just two color choices, Ingot Silver or Black, both with body and roof styling in contrasting chili-pepper-red paint.

The remake of the Ford Mustang Boss 302 delivers substance along with a body design that remains faithful to its predecessor. Since its release in the spring of 2011, the Boss has been a featured discussion of websites such as Netcars.com blogs and has been lauded by car aficionados who appreciate Ford's dedication to their original vision of the car in this newest model.
